Two Suspects Arrested-Arrival of Inspector Fosnes-Safe Drawers and Vouchers Found-Two Hundred Dollars Reward.
Saturday evening officers went out to the Lake Herman bagnio and arrested two men suspected of being implicated in the postoffice robbery. About $15 was found on one and a small amount of change on the other, but no material evidence whatever that would incriminate them in this deed. They would give no account of themselves further than that they came from St. Paul. The officers learned that the men had staid in the bagnio over night leaving there just before daylight the morning of the robbery. They afterwards had breakfast at a restaurant in this city about 8 o'clock and at 11 a. m. returned to the bagnio where they slept the greater part of the day until arrested by the officers in the evening.
Yesterday as John Larkin's little son was playing hide and seek around the German Baptist church with other children, he discovered three small drawers piled carefully one within another under the church steps and informed his father who investigated and found in the under drawer the missing vouchers and the key which changes the combination of the cracked safe. Postmaster Tobin says all of the missing vouchers were returned in the boxes.
It is generally believed the men apprehended had a part in the robbery although one suspected character well known here has not been seen since the robbery.
Postoffice Inspector Fosnes arrived in the city Saturday evening to look into the condition of the postoffice after the robbery. Mr. Fosnes is also considerable of a detective and had a long interview this forenoon with the two men now lodged in jail on suspicion, but he failed to elicit anything from them in regard to their antecedents, home, movements, destination or intentions. They are evidently hard cases.
Two hundred dollars is the standing government reward for the apprehension of postoffice safe robbers, and if anyone has doubts about this Inspector Fosnes says he will guarantee it personally.
As to whether the postmaster is held personally responsible for funds taken by safe crackers, Inspector Fosnes states that where due diligence is exercised by the postmaster in the protection of government funds, the postoffice department usually exempts him from personal loss. Postmaster Tobin is recognized in this community as a careful and discreet business man, and when the report is made to the department by the inspector it will undoubtedly show that due diligence was exercised and Mr. Tobin will be relieved from personal responsibility and loss.
