Legislation on the License Question.—It is generally anticipated that the Legislature will make some amendment of the laws regulating the sale of intoxicating liquors. We understand there are at least three several kinds of petitions in circulation for signature. One for a repeal of all laws restraining the sale. Another, prohibiting the County Court from granting license except in accordance with the vote of the people of the towns at March meeting. A third, of having the whole subject placed in the power of County Commissioners elected by the people.
So far as we can judge of the public feeling in this region, we think the latter proposition most decidedly in favor, both with the friends of temperance and the community generally. It leaves the whole subject within reach of the people, and at the same time removes it from being a bone of angry contention in town meeting. If the friends of temperance can succeed in electing a board of Commissioners opposed to granting licenses, we doubt not the minority would cheerfully submit, and so vice versa.
