Franklin High X-Ray Unit To Fight T-B

The Christmas Seal X-ray Unit of the Anti-Tuberculosis League of King County will be stationed in Franklin High School March 13, 14 and 17 to offer free chest x-rays to high school students and residents of the Mount Baker district, Mrs. Keith Kimerer, president of the Franklin High School P. T. A., announced yesterday.

High School students, 15 years of age and older, who have their parents' consent will have an opportunity to have an x-ray during school hours. March 13 and 14.

The mobile unit will be open from 1 to 5 and from 6-8 p. m. March 17 for adults of the district. Appointments can be made by telephoning Mrs. J. C. Bennett, Lander 3881. on Tuesday, March 11, or Mrs. Fred Cutts, Lander 2198, Wednesday, March 12.

X-ray finds tuberculosis in the early stages as well as others. It is when TB is found in the beginning stages before symptoms appear that the chances for recovery are the greatest.

The mobile unit takes miniature x-rays which screen out persons with normal chests. Those whose x-rays show suspicious shadows are referred to a radiologist for a 14" x 17" large x-ray and to their physicians for an interpretation. The large x-ray is also free, paid for by Christmas Seal Sale funds.

About one person in every 200 x-rayed is discovered with active tuberculosis, Mrs. Kimerer said.

Finding that one person is all-important because he is a constant menace to the health of all those around him. Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease, passed from the sick to the well person.

Each person x-rayed receives a confidential letter within three weeks, The survey is limited to those 15 years of age and older because the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis among younger children is very slight.

This is one of the services financed by the sale of Christmas Seals.
