Foreclosure Sale
Of Farm Tools
MEDINA, O., Aug. 22—(AP)--
Sheriff Roy Kruggel of Medina county blamed outsiders today for an attempt to turn a foreclosure sale into a penny auction during which cries of "lynch him" were raised and a few heads were slugged.
With a crowd of about 500 at hand, Fred Koons, Medina auctioneer, started a sale late yesterday at the farm of Cort Stuart, near Spencer, to satisfy a $387 mortgage. Kruggel said Stuart had consented to the sale.
In the crowd were "about 150 to 200 troublemakers," said the officer, who thought they had come from around Cleveland. Expecting trouble, the sheriff had brought eight of his deputies and four from Lorain county.
Some of the leaders threw a rope over a nearby tree and threatened to hang anyone who bid more than eight cents on anything. On the first item, a plow, a stranger bid eight cents.
George Schwartz, a farmer, offered a dollar. A group of men headed for Schwartz, raising cries of "lynch him". The sheriff and his deputies waded in with their blackjacks and struck a half dozen men.
The leaders of the disturbance withdrew and the sale was resumed, although a few stones and eggs were hurled. A grain binder was bid up to $75 and sold. It was reported sale brought in $365. The mortgage was on Stuart's tools and other chattels.
