FIRE DEPARTMENT HORSE HOMESICK
The Animal Refused all Food Two Weeks.

The city of Salem has had considerable difficulty of late in equipping its fire department with serviceable horses. The handsome bay mare weighing 1450 pounds, that was recently purchased from Mr. Lee, of Turner precinct, proved unsuitable for the work and has been disposed of. The animal cost $150 and was on Saturday exchanged for a 6 year old gray mare that was formerly the property of Mr. McCarty, of Turner.

The new horse, which matches in color its mate on the fire engine team, is somewhat lighter, weighing but 1200 pounds but an increase in weight is expected. The bay mare, during its two weeks' service in the city's fire department refused to eat any food whatever and was evidently quite homesick. Its gradual falling off physically necessitated a substitution. The new horse is proving a splendid addition to the department having quite completely mastered the drill already. Councilman Riggs says the substitute has an appetite equal to that of a threshing machine which indicates that the new arrival is at least possessed of good digestive organs. The members of the council are quite pleased with the last addition which quite completely equips the department with motive power.
