Full Text

Westfield, Mass. July 18.—Melancholy Occurrence.—On Sunday morning last, Mr. Lyman Loomis, of Russell, aged 36, went to bathing in the ponds. After he had been in some time, he went to the shore and took his son, aged nearly six years, and put him upon his back, telling him he was going to swim out with him when he had swam some distance, & the water being over his head, he sunk with his son to rise no more! Notice was given to the neighbors immediately, by some boys who were on shore, but it was about an hour and a half before the bodies were found and taken out of the water.

There is something very striking in the thought that a father should innocently go to the shore and take his son into the water, where they both were drowned; in a time, too, when they little thought it—yea, how little did the smiling boy, and the unsuspecting parent think of finding together a watery grave.
