The Militia.—According to the official returns, the number of militia in the country is 2,303,389, of which 8,201 are assigned to the District of Columbia. The number of arms apportioned in muskets for the year 1852 was 14,615, of which the District received 52. The whole number of arsenals and depots for arms is twenty-six. The money values of the artillery and small arms of every description, including gun carriages, implements, accoutrements, projectiles and ammunition, at these places, on the 13th of June, 1853, amounted to $13,618,062. If employed to their reasonable capacity, the two armories, at Springfield and Harper's Ferry, can produce from 35,000 or 40,000 muskets, and from 6,000 to 8,000 rifles annually. And all this in addition to the arms already in possession of the army, the navy, and our citizen soldiery. So it is seen that the material of war is fully equal to the personnel of the country.
