2. The distributive force of the electricity and its velocity of action—being about 300,000 miles per second—will be shown by the explosion of more than one hundred charges; the highest number heretofore attained being about twenty-one cartridges at the same instant, and each trial varying in results.
3. The explosive merits of his newly-discovered thunderbolt for artillery purposes, compared by experiments with gunpowder. A charge of each will be placed in like heavy timber works and exploded under similar circumstances.
The explosions will take place in the field south of the Executive Mansion, and the battery will be placed near the road running immediately in the rear of the mansion ground.
Through the kindness of Brig. Gen. Dent, commanding Department of Washington, troops will be stationed around the field to prevent accidents. The President has given his consent for the public to occupy the ground in the rear of the Executive Mansion, where ladies can witness the experiments with safety.
Brev. Maj. Gen. Dyer, Chief of the Ordnance Department, has ordered for Mr. Shaffner's use on that occasion twelve pieces of artillery, which will be discharged under electrical conditions.
