Before the United States Supreme Court now in session at Washington, a case involving the constitutionality of the Enforcement Act, from South Carolina, argued last winter, by Reverdy Johnson, against the constitutionality of the Act, was on the docket for decision; but the pardon of the party by the President, on account of extenuating circumstances in the case, concluded the case by abatement. Mr. Johnson was quite anxious that the case should be decided last year, and was hopeful of a decision sustaining his position, relying somewhat upon its sanction by the then Chief Justice.
