Twenty or more of the smaller communities in Southeast Alaska are to be served by a circulating library system as the result of recent action by the Sears-Roebuck Foundation, according to B. Frank Heintzleman of Juneau. Heintzleman was recently notified that the foundation has offered to sponsor this project and defray practically all of the cost if local agencies would cooperate in managing the undertaking. The foundation will buy the original stock of books, make replacements and additions as needed, and provide the 60 to 75 units of a combination sectional bookcase-shipping container which will be used. The Rotary Clubs of Juneau and Ketchikan have agreed to act as advisors and co-sponsors of the project under the general direction of Heintzleman. Various public agencies, mission groups and others operating small vessels in Southeast Alaska waters will be depended upon to shift the units of the library from one village to another as desired. The foundation intends that the library shall provide entertaining reading for men and women, boys and girls, on a great variety of subjects, including fiction by well-known writers. Some text books on vocational subjects will doubtless also be included in the library for use of those interested.
