By a vote of 8697 ayes to 1027 noes, workers now employed by the Dodge Brothers corporation in Hamtramck Wednesday gave their approval to a plan to shorten working hours in an effort to give more work to their fellow employes who have been victims of the recent layoffs.

This announcement was made Wednesday evening by Richard T. Frankensteen, assistant UAW president, when he declared that the vote emphasizes the spirit of solidarity of the union in meeting an economic situation that industry has been lax in solving.

"This splendid spirit," Frankensteen said, "shows how labor is fighting to see, especially during the holiday season, that the families are not turned out into the winter streets and that the children of workers can have their chances to have the comfort of warm clothing and a participation in the Yuletide spirit.

Business has failed to give this assurance, but the UAW's members are willingly sacrificing to obtain it."

Brother Frankensteen, who is also president of Dodge local, said that the workers' mandate would be immediately given to the Dodge corporation officials and immediate action to comply with its demand would be asked.

The question on the ballot, given to all three shifts at the Dodge plant, said, "Are you in favor of cutting your hours so as to share the hours with your fellow worker?" The ballot stressed that only the honest and unhampered opinion of the voter was asked.

The vote was 8697, yes; 1027, no; 53, spoiled ballots.
