Full Text
Capt. Gray in the brig Dolphin arrived at this port on Saturday last, from Lisbon, brings accounts from that place to Oct. 24. They briefly state that on the 22d Oct all the ports in Portugal were ordered to be shut against the English and that the Portuguese government had joined the continental cause with a view as was declared of accelerating a maritime peace. Capt. Gray further reports, that a few days before he sailed a rumour was prevalent said to come by the way of Gibraltar, that an engagement had taken place between the English and French and Spanish fleet in which the latter were entirely defeated. This report with a similar one received in England, on the 10th November, renders it highly probable, that a great naval action has been recently fought; but whether by the English fleet under adm Purvis on the Cadiz station or by adm Collingwood in the Mediterranean time must unfold.
