Dublin, March 14—Six prisoners convicted of complicity in the killing of British intelligence officers and members of the crown forces were executed in Mountjoy prison today. The convicted men were hanged in pairs at intervals of one hour. Twenty thousand people gathered outside the prison while the executions were taking place. All work in the city was stopped until 11 o'clock in the forenoon and even the postoffice and telegraph services were suspended.
Dublin, March 13—The Lord Mayor was officially informed tonight that the government had decided that the law should take its course in the case of the six prisoners in Mount Joy. In consequence the executions will be carried out tomorrow morning.
There was a striking demonstration here today in protest against the execution tomorrow of the six prisoners in Mount Joy, who are accused of complicity in the killing of intelligence officers and participation in an ambuscade.
Banners bearing such legends as "England murders the innocent in vengeance," were borne through the streets in a procession arranged hastily by women overnight. The procession started at noon from St. Stephen's Green, and the paraders marched four abreast in military order in company defiance of the military regulations. They received constant accessions in strength from women and girls coming out of the churches and also were joined by thousands of citizens, including many hundreds of Irish volunteers. There was no interference from the police.
Reaching Mount Joy prison, where the condemned men were incarcerated, the women lined up two deep along the prison wall and planted their banners opposite the gates. Then they knelt and recited the Rosary, after which they silently dispersed.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin and Father O'Flanagan visited the condemned men this morning. They reported that they were facing their fate with composure.
Throughout Saturday night the condemned men, who are paired off in cells one about the other, sang Irish songs.
