"We remark that in an evening paper of this city, the Democratick Press, one of the Senators of Pennsylvania in Congress, Mr. Findlay, is accused of having daily exhibited himself on the floor of that Assembly, in a state of intoxication! This charge is indeed very grave—it affects deeply the character of the individual, and the honour of the State and Nation. If it be not true, it is a superlative instance of scandalum magnatum, and ought to be severely visited as a publick as well as private injury. On the supposition that it is well founded—a fact which we can hardly allow to be possible—every effort should be made in the proper quarters to remove as soon as possible so shameful an example of misconduct; and it might be urged as a lesson to the party-politicians of Pennsylvania, who have not been abundantly careful in the selection of Representatives for her in the National Councils."
[Mr. Findlay is not remarkable for his literary qualifications. A fac simile of one of his letters to the Editor of the Democratick Press has been published, and a writer in the Boston Courier believes that "a single word of eleven letters, in this literary phenomenon, contained seventeen blunders, having been spelled with twenty-three letters, but six of which belonged to the word!!]
