Albany, (New York) July 6.

On Thursday was celebrated in this city, pursuant to the order of arrangements, the anniversary of our Independence, which was ushered in by discharge of cannon and the ringing of bells, &c.

We are sorry to state a circumstance which had a momentary effect to disturb the harmony of the day. The exercises in church had just commenced, when an alarm was spread that the west gallery was falling, (under it most of the ladies were seated,) which in a moment created a scene of general confusion. The audience seemed to rise in a body, some hurrying to the door, and others leaping from the ground and gallery windows, many of whom received slight injury though none we believe, were severely hurt*—The alarm arose from the circumstance of a part of the ground floor of the west aisle sinking five or six inches, owing to some defect of the beams underneath.—This accident, happening near one of the pillars, gave rise to the idea that the gallery would fall; those who were near the spot, supposing that the pillars which supported it, rested upon the floor. It may be proper here to remark that the pillars rest upon stone piers, sunk a considerable distance in the earth, and have no dependence for support on the floor of the church. In a short time, however, order was restored, a part of the audience returned, and the exercises proceeded to their conclusion without further interruption.

* We have since learnt that a lady had her skull fractured, and a gentleman his shoulder dislocated.

Event Details

The anniversary of Independence was celebrated with discharge of cannon and ringing of bells. During church exercises, an alarm spread that the west gallery was falling due to part of the ground floor sinking five or six inches from defective beams, causing general confusion and people hurrying to doors or leaping from windows. The pillars supporting the gallery rest on stone piers, not the floor.
