Marvin Erskine Ripley, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Ripley, of Howardsville, won the coveted "United States Rubber Company award" for outstanding qualities in citizenship, leadership and sportsmanship at Scottsville High. The award also carries $200 in cash and a loving cup.
He also won the "Danforth Foundation Award," the social science award and the William Day Smith Award, all of which were presented him at Class Night exercises at Scottsville High School Friday night.
Shirley Cunningham, of Scottsville, matched Ripley by winning four awards, the "Danforth Foundation Award," shorthand award, English award and she was valedictorian of the class.
Other awards presented were: good citizenship award to Virginia O'Brien, excellence in American History to Billy McDearmon, a junior, home economics award to Joyce Currier, a junior; mathematics award to Patsy Simmers, a sophomore; agriculture award to Roland Leep, a junior, typewriter award to Carol Jean Duncan, a senior; Latin award to Norma Fitzgerald, a sophomore. Betsy von Krogh was given a $25 war bond for her winning essay on Thomas Jefferson.
The class presented a bond for fifty dollars to the school as its parting gift and to be used for a curtains for the new auditorium.
