Smith Heads County
Campaign for Hume

Lathrop E. Smith, nationally known conservationist and Montgomery County civic leader, has accepted appointment as Montgomery County campaign manager for David Hume, candidate for the Democratic Party nomination for Governor.

In accepting the appointment, Smith said he is supporting Hume because Maryland needs him. "He can and will become our next Governor," Smith said.

He added that he is impressed with Hume's ideas and solutions on a number of problems.

"I am impressed by Mr. Hume's record with respect to conservation, water and land use problems," Smith said in a statement issued from Baltimore where he attended a meeting of the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts, of which he is secretary-treasurer. Smith's home is Boyds.

"Those of us who have been angered and frustrated by the weakness and failures of leadership on the State level that have resulted in the savings and loan and slot machine scandals, to say nothing of the embarrassing Route 40 incidents, look forward to much needed progress and the positive leadership we can expect from David Hume as our State's new chief executive," Smith said.

Smith's statement also noted his agreement with Hume's hopes and ideas for raising the level of education throughout the Free State.

Hume, speaking from his state campaign headquarters in Baltimore, expressed his appreciation of Smith's support.

"We in this campaign for a new era in Maryland politics are honored and heartened that a man of Mr. Smith's stature has accepted with us this great challenge."
