Federal Agents and Police of Various Cities Making Arrests
WASHINGTON, March 18.—The Treasury Department announced this morning that as the result of the drive on crime, Federal agents and police of various cities in the United States have so far arrested 2,389 persons.
CRY FOR QUARTER
WASHINGTON, March 18.—The Treasury Department heard the first cry for quarter last Saturday night in its two-day-old anti-crime campaign as late tabulations showed a record of 2110 arrests and property seizures running into the millions of dollars.
Officials predicted that arrests will reach 3,000 before the concerted push is over.
The cry for quarter came from a group of bootleggers in Cleveland who reported in a telegram to Secretary Morgenthau as "getting sick of the whole business." The group members were among 175 persons picked up by agents of the Alcohol Unit.
Secretary Morgenthau indicated the drive will be continued indefinitely.
The Coast Guard is taking an active part in the crime drive, their activities including boarding of 1553 vessels to search for contraband rum, narcotics, smuggled goods and suspected persons.
