MT. STERLING, Ky., Dec. 3. (U.P.)—The defense presented more witnesses today in an effort to establish the innocence of W. B. Jones, charged with conspiracy to murder Jim Daniels, Harlan county deputy sheriff in a gun battle near Evarts, Ky., last May 5.
Testimony of 22 defense witnesses, most of whom agreed that Jones, mine union official, was not at the scene of the battle and refuted state evidence that he had plotted the murder, is already in the records.
The problem of providing food and shelter for the large number of defense witnesses was solved by agreement of the state to pay the expenses of 75 defense witnesses.
James Price, Philadelphia, representative of the general defense committee of Chicago, agreed to take care of all over the 75 provided for by the state. The defense plans to present about 100 more witnesses.
The problem became acute when several defense witnesses, brought here from their homes in Harlan county, went without their suppers for a few hours. The manager of a hotel where they had been staying turned them out until some definite arrangements were made for their expenses.
