NATIONAL SPEAKERS ADDRESS THRONGS AT RIVER-VIEW PARK MESSAGE FROM ROOSEVELT READ WOMEN ACTIVE IN ENROLLING MEMBERS OF OWN SEX IN LEAGUE
Chicago, Aug. 30--One of the most enthusiastic political gatherings ever held in Chicago occurred Saturday when the big Progressive day celebration at Riverview Park took place. Officials of the park estimated the attendance at 200,000, while managers of the Progressive event claim 100,000 of these were attracted by the political celebration.
The Progressive day celebration began in the morning, when, from 8 until 12 o'clock, there was a reception at the Progressive Club for out-of-town members of the new party. From 12 to 2 o'clock there was a buffet luncheon at the club, following which the following speakers delivered brief addresses: Thomas D. Knight, Miss Antoinette Funk and Dr. W. A. Evans.
The parade, in which several hundred automobiles formed in line, started from Twenty-fourth street and Michigan avenue. The automobiles were draped with Progressive party emblems and were preceded by a band.
At 4:30 o'clock there was an open-air mass meeting in the motordrome stadium. State Senator Walter Clyde Jones presided. The speakers on the program for the meeting were James R. Garfield of Ohio, Harry J. Allen of Kansas, Mrs. Grace Wilbur Trout, president of the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, and Alderman Chas. E. Merriam.
Message From Roosevelt.
During this meeting a message from Colonel Roosevelt was read.
Dwight D. Heard of Phoenix, Ariz., editor of the Arizona Republican, who is a party leader in the West, was the chief speaker at the banquet at 6:30 o'clock by the Cook County organization of the Progressive party. More than 1,000 tickets were purchased for the banquet. It was one of the leading features of the day's celebration.
Women Enroll 50,000.
The banquet was held in the park casino. The other speakers were Frank H. Funk, of Bloomington, and Mrs. Sherman M. Booth, chairman of the legislative committee of the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association.
Throughout the park were located at convenient places booths where women enrolled as members of the Woman's League of the Progressive Party. In this enrollment, which began yesterday, names of 250 prominent suffragists headed the list. The aim of the Progressive women in charge of the enrollment is to obtain 50,000 names.
East St. Louisan Honored.
Fred S. Willbur of East St. Louis was vice-chairman of the Progressive Day celebration. Mr. Willbur is acting chairman of the Progressive State Central Committee in the absence of Chairman John F. Bass, who is in Europe.
