KETCHIKAN, (P) -- A federal court jury has awarded a $4 judgment against Emery F. Tobin, defendant in a civil libel suit in which damages of $45,712.76 were sought.
The jury deliberated five hours before awarding a verdict in favor of C. A. Zaruba and setting $1 punitive and $1 compensatory damages on each of two causes in the action.
Zaruba accused Tobin of libel in connection with a letter sent to city officials here in March, 1957, when the city council was considering a liquor license application by Zaruba. Also involved were comments attributed to Tobin in a newspaper story published at Juneau.
Tobin is former publisher of the Alaska Sportsman Magazine.
He is a Republican candidate for the first Alaska State Legislature in next Tuesday's election.
