Election News.

The telegraph announced some days ago that the election in Vermont had been crowned by an immense republican triumph, and all the figures and results were manipulated so as to give that impression. But now the facts are slowly beginning to come out. In twenty-eight towns in that State the Democrats gain 2,435 on the Governor's vote of last year. Now this is pretty good, and by the time the returns come in it will be found that the conservatives have done all we claimed they could do before the election took place-that is, add considerably to the usually inconsiderable Democratic vote of that State.

So again in California. A few days ago and that State had gone republican by 25,000 majority. The President and Secretary Stanton received dispatches to that effect, a few days later, however, and the enthusiastic Republican telegraph agent thought that 16,000 would be more like the figure, but intimated that the soldiers' vote would add considerably to the Republican majority. For ourselves we decline to place any faith in these reported majorities. We believe they have been invented to effect the Maine election. It is possible that through some misunderstanding among the Democrats, the Republicans have elected their ticket in California; but we will not believe even that until we see the official figures.
