Executive committee of the republican party
of Virginia have called for a meeting of that
committee in Richmond on the 29th instant.
From indications here, in Richmond, and in
numerous other quarters of the State, it is patent
that at present, at least, the republican
party in Virginia is weaker than it ever was
before, and that its surest strength, the negroes,
has gone over bodily to the read justers. What
changes may take place between now and next
November are for the future to show, but, at
the present time, nothing is apparently more
certain than that republicanism has been
swallowed up by the greater conservative of the
State, the readjusters. And the reason is
plain. Republicans, as such, are impotent, but
under the guise of readjusters, they have the
State in a sling.
