We hear from Waterbury in Connecticut, that one Abigail How, aged about 8 Years (an adopted Daughter of Mr. John Slaughter of that Place) having for some Time had a hankering for Rum; Mr. Slaughter informed the Child's Friends of it, who advised him, (the next Time he asked for any) to give her as much as she would drink. Accordingly on the 3d Inst. one of the Family told the little Girl she might drink as much as she would; she was well pleased with the Offer, and readily accepted the Rum, which was given her in a small Cup; and having drank almost a Pint, she declined drinking any more; and being asked if she had enough? she answered she wanted more, but was afraid she should be drunk; They told her she might drink what was in the Cup, (which completed a Pint) and they believed it would do her no hurt, upon which she readily drank it: Soon after she fell into a sound Sleep, from which she could not be waked, but expired the next Day, tho' all possible Means were used for her recovery.
