James W. Huston, commissioner of public works, said Saturday there is no cause for alarm concerning the water situation since there is presently on hand a 25-day supply.
The reserve supply is increasing steadily, Huston said although water is being hauled from Puerto Rico by a barge acquired from the Navy and a government-owned tug.
Another vessel, a water tanker contracted by William Hurst, is impounded by a U.S. District order in Puerto Rico, pending a legal decision.
Although there was no direct word from Hurst, Huston said it was learned that he is in Tampa, Fla. consulting with his principals on posting bond for the vessel.

vessel.
Concerning the distillation plant, he said it is turning out 300,000 gallons daily 50,000 gallons more than its rated output - and is "doing fine."
According to the commissioner in an earlier report this output is insufficient by 50,000 to 100,000 gallons to meet the island's daily need by itself.
The balance must be supplied either by Hurst's ship, the "Islander," or by the standby tug-and-barge combination.

Event Details
James W. Huston, commissioner of public works, stated there is no alarm over water situation with a steady increasing 25-day reserve supply. Water is being transported from Puerto Rico using a Navy-acquired barge and government-owned tug. A contracted water tanker by William Hurst is impounded in Puerto Rico by U.S. District order awaiting legal resolution on bond. Hurst is reportedly in Tampa, Fla., consulting on posting bond. The distillation plant produces 300,000 gallons daily, 50,000 more than rated, and is performing well, though earlier reports indicate it falls short of the island's daily needs by 50,000 to 100,000 gallons, requiring supplementation from Hurst's ship 'Islander' or the tug-and-barge.
