One Hundred Local People In Rockville Show Monday And Tuesday Evenings
Next Monday and Tuesday evening, the Henderson-Smith-Edmonds American Legion will present the three-act musical comedy "Crazy Politics" for the enjoyment of Rockville audiences.
The dates May 6 and 7 have been decided upon to give further preparation to the play. A cast of twenty people has been selected and rehearsals are now in the final stages of preparation. One hundred local people will take part in the production.
The plot of the comedy centers around a small town's election of a candidate for mayor. Pat O'Donnell, local newspaperman, is in difficulties with the local police when Mrs. Van Dyne fails to appear. The Peoples Party forces O'Donnell to masquerade as Mrs. Van Dyne. Townsend Howes plays the part of the ritzy Mrs. Van Dyne and his lines delivered in falsetto voice add a note of hilarious comedy to the play. Mrs. Van Dyne has a French maid, a woman secretary and a 12-year-old daughter, Minnie. The women become unavoidably detained in Paris, and as the masquerade must be fully carried out, three other members of the people's party are forced to dress up as the missing party.
Stokes Moulden plays the part of the small daughter Minnie, and has the members of the cast in hysterics when he steps forth blond curls and all, and asks if someone wouldn't like to kiss her dolly? Cooney, local High School teacher is very charming as the French maid, and Mr. Harvey Fraley as the lady secretary who, loses her skirt, is very well cast. Perhaps the finest character portrayal in the whole play is that of Mr. Dave Goldberg as the small town merchant Abie Goldberg, who becomes involved in the monkey business of the party and finally saves the day by capturing the notorious criminal Spider McGinnis. Other performances of note are those of Mrs. Guy Watkins as the giggly old maid, Beaulah Higginbottom; Mrs. Frank Higgins as Mrs. Watson, who is eternally looking for her husband, and Miss Elizabeth Allen of Washington, as the sweetheart of Pat O'Donnell. There are many other performances of note which must be seen by the audience to be enjoyed.
A lively group of local chorus girls adds a great deal of color and gaiety to the ensemble with catchy dance steps and beautiful costumes. Twenty-five girls make up this group.
Two full hours of thoroughly enjoyable entertainment are promised to any one who attends. The play has proven to be a hit wherever it has been presented, and the American Legion feels fortunate in being able to bring it to Rockville. All tickets bought must be exchanged for a reserved seat at Waters Drug Store at no extra cost. Remember the new dates, May 6 and 7, Monday and Tuesday at the Rockville High School Auditorium.
