Greensboro, N. C., Oct. 13.-The celebration of Founder's Day at the State Normal and Industrial College yesterday was most appropriately begun by a most impressive and beautiful act, when at 9 o'clock a procession of women in pure white went to Greene Hill Cemetery and strewed the grave of the college's founder, the late Dr. Charles D. McIver, with flowers and autumn garlands. In the procession were committees from the faculty, the literary societies, all the classes and the entire senior class.
At 11:30 o'clock a large audience assembled in the college auditorium where the formal exercises of the day were had. The invocation was by Rev. J. W. Long, of Spring Garden Street Methodist Church, and after appropriate songs by the college glee club, President Foust announced that the Board of Directors had set apart the day, which was North Carolina's official education day, as the date for an annual anniversary celebration of Founder's Day for the college. Then followed greetings from the State University, by Prof. M. C. S. Noble, and from the State A. and M. College, by Prof. W. A. Withers. President Foust then introduced as the speaker for the occasion a man who he said, next to members of the faculty, probably knew and sympathized with and assisted Dr. McIver in his great life work more than any other man in North Carolina. Mr. Josephus Daniels, of Raleigh, "a great editor of a great North Carolina loving newspaper."
Mr. Daniels delivered a splendid address, clearly and eloquently analyzing the work which Dr. McIver wrought for North Carolina in not only founding this great woman's institution, but in compelling the State to see that the door of opportunity which had been closed to women in the broad sense should be unbarred, unlocked and a fair chance given the sisters as well as the brothers for a practical educational training, as would equip her for any duty in life. He outlined the plan upon which Dr. McIver proceeded, showing clearly and with fine sympathy what had been already accomplished for the uplift of the whole State by this greater chance for its women.
It was universally acknowledged to be an excellent address and worthy of its subject.
