DREADNOUGHT FLORIDA.

Unique View of the Queen of the United States Navy.

The photograph of this dreadnought Florida that is herewith reproduced is unique in that it was taken from the Brooklyn bridge just as the ship passed beneath. The view presented could have been obtained no other way except from a warship hovering close above.

Looked at from shore, the fighting tops that crown the latticed masts appear no more than a narrow cut in half. In reality they are big enough so that four men can move about in them comfortably. They are great circles of steel whose walls are sufficiently thick to withstand a small projectile.

Yet from the distance at which naval contests are carried on in these days they make an infinitesimal target. The openwork mast that supports the fighting top looks to the unpracticed eye like a tangle of rods and wires. Yet every line has been the subject of long and arduous study on the part of American naval architects.

So high are the fighting tops of the Florida that they cleared the bridge structure by only a scant four feet.
