Good Reasons for Giving
Thanks
When you bow your head and give thanks tomorrow,
whether it be at church or at your home table.
there is one thing for which you can give thanks and
share with 150 million others —thanks for being
an
American with freedoms and food far more abundant
than any other place in our world.
The founding fathers who landed at Plymouth
came to the New World to set up some kind of govern-
ment to avoid the dangers of anarchy or dictatorship. Their
compact agreed to "submit to such government and
governors as they should by common consent agree to
make and choose." We, the people of Alaska, benefit
in an indirect way and, being typical Americans, look
forward to the time when we may help in the choosing
of the leaders of our nation.
In the meantime, we must express thanks for the
gift of American citizenship, the full rights of which will
someday be ours.
If you have difficulty finding the right words to
make
that prayer we recommend the following by
General Jonathon Wainright, hero of Corregidor, who
wrote it on his first Thanksgiving at home since Pearl
Harbor:
"O
God,
our Father, today
we
give
Thee
thanks for the things we take for granted, for free-
dom, for security of life, for food and shelter and the
presence of loved ones. We thank Thee that men long
denied these blessings have through sacrifice and pain
once more attained them.
"We thank Thee that once again men may have
hope, opportunity to work and plan for a better future,
a chance to secure peace and an ampler life for them-
themselves and their children.
"Keep us humble in the day of victory, make us
wise in the presence of great problems, strong and
brave in face of any danger, and sympathetic and gen-
erous as we face the appalling need of a war-torn world.
"In gratitude for all those who paid the price of
victory, we now ask Thy guidance as we dedicate our-
themselves to that cause for which they gave their last
whole measure of devotion. Lord of Hosts, be with us
yet, lest we forget! Amen."
