DEATH'S DOINGS.
INQUESTS BY THE CORONERS.
THE FOURTH OF JULY RIOT.
The investigation commenced on Monday by Coroner Perry, for the purpose of inquiring into the causes of the disgraceful riot which occurred in this doomed city on the 4th instant, with such disastrous consequences, was resumed again yesterday, at the Coroner's office. The following evidence was taken, but in consequence of the absence of material witnesses who had been summoned, the examination was not concluded. It will be continued at 9 o'clock this morning:
Leonard Scheflin, residing at 42 Downing street, being sworn says—I am a Special Policeman; about 4 o'clock on last Saturday afternoon, we were some thirty of us detailed to quell a disturbance in the Seventh Ward; while proceeding up Bayard street we saw a fight going on between the Bowery Boys and another party; about the middle of the block above Baxter street they were throwing missiles at each other; before we reached the place we were met about half a block below by a party of some three hundred who appeared to be of the same party who were attacking the Bowery Boys; this crowd attacked us, threw stones and other missiles at us; we mixed in with the crowd; some of us saw a man throw a stone and run into 53 Baxter street; we went in to arrest him, and while coming out some one threw a stone and hit me in the breast; I and others arrested him, and took him to White street; I have ascertained since that his name is Thomas McGerry; while we were there pistols were fired and brickbats thrown from the houses; I could not recognize any persons in the crowd.
William Evans being sworn, says—I am Special Policeman; I was with Scheflin at the time of the arrest; McGeary I recognize as one who threw a stone.
Wm. Y. Toft, residing at No. 44 Houston street, being sworn, says—I am a Special Policeman; about 4 1/2 o'clock some 26 men, myself included, were sent from White street to the Seventh Ward; as we turned into Bayard street we were attacked by a crowd of people who threw stones and other missiles at us; we at first drove them a distance, when they got a reinforcement and we were compelled to retreat; we had passed through the upper side of the crowd, when we were met by a number of the Bowery Boys who intimated that they wished to assist us; they going with us, we turned again on the mob and defended ourselves as well as we could; many of our men were wounded; we were again forced to retreat and remove our wounded; those of us who were not disabled went to the Seventh Ward; the Police all wore badges, so that they could be distinguished; I knew none of the crowd.
William How, special Policeman, residing at No. 76 Washington street, being sworn, says—I was sent up to Bayard street with some 30 or 40 others, to assist a squad of Police who were being attacked in that street; I arrested a person who was throwing stones at the Policemen, and conveyed him to the Fifth Ward Station-House.
Richard Van Veghten, residing at No.7 Chrystie street, being sworn, says—I recognize the prisoner McGeary, as the one who was arrested by Wm. How: I also recognize Thomas McGowan as one of the rioters arrested.
Israel Bower being sworn, says: I am a regular Policeman—I recognize the largest of the two dead men who lie in White street as having been one of the rioters on the fourth; he belonged to what are called the "Dead Rabbits;" he was urging on the rioters.
Thomas Dutcher, residing on the corner of Twenty-fifth street and Ninth avenue, being sworn, says—I am of the Special Police; was at Bayard street on the 4th about 6 o'clock; while arresting a rioter I was attacked by another man, who hit me with a brick in the back, and he struck me again; I was forced to release my prisoner, and arrested the person who struck me, and with the assistance of Policeman Ellis, took him to the Tombs; I have since ascertained his name to be James McBride.
Stephen D. Bailey, residing at No. 160 West Thirtieth street, being sworn, says—I am Special Policeman; I was at Bayard street at 6 o'clock on July 4: made an arrest of a young man who was pressed on to me by others; his name was Barnard McGinn; I did not see him take any part in the affair.
J. C. Cohen, residing at No. 21 Columbia street, being sworn, says—I was in the riot of the 4th, as reported; while there I saw a young man who was about twenty years of age raise a gun and deliberately shoot the man supposed to be Bernard White; deceased was throwing bricks at the crowd; some person in the crowd exclaimed that "Mac shot that fellow;" I also saw the Italian boy shot in the eye; I saw several other persons injured, but I cannot recognize any of the rioters.
John J. Garbet residing at No. 458 Eighth avenue, being sworn, says—I am of the Special Police, and was at Bayard street at 6 o'clock of the 4th of July; I arrested a person by the name of Edward Dye, who had stones in his hands at the time, and who, I believe, threw a stone which had just been previously thrown at an officer; he was conveyed to the Tombs.
John T. Pilgrim, being sworn, says—I am of the Special Police; I reside at No.7 Sheriff street: I was at the scene of the riot in Bayard street, corner of Mulberry street, at 6 o'clock of the 4th; I arrested a man whose name I ascertained to be Frank Fitzpatrick; he had two brickbats in his hands; he struck at me with one; I warded off the blow, and seized him and took him to No. 88 White street, and from there to Franklin street.
