Filipino Fights Cancelled; Fear of Riot Is Cause

California Ring Bouts Halted; Islanders Are Scheduled to Appear.

EL CENTRO, Calif., Jan. 31 (AP).—Boxing bouts at the El Centro arena, in which a Filipino had been scheduled to appear, were cancelled tonight.

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 31 (P).—Reversal of an order by William Hanlon, chairman of the state athletic commission, barring Filipinos from boxing contests during prevailing racial disturbances, was characterized as "pouring gasoline on fire" in an appeal the commissioner received late today from Brawley to prevent the islanders from appearing in El Centro contests tonight.

The appeal was made in a telegram a Brawley newspaper sent Hanlon. It stated that a Filipino was being held in jail in El Centro for trying to sequester a girl, not a Filipino, and that permitting the appearance of Filipino boxers at this time would be like pouring gasoline on fire.

Referred to Woods

The matter was referred to James Woods, state athletic commissioner in San Francisco, who earlier in the day was quoted by Inspector Frank Moran, Los Angeles, as authorizing reversal of Hanlon's order in southern California.

Woods informed the chairman's Sacramento office he would act immediately on the Brawley appeal. Local athletic officials said Woods did not indicate what action he intended taking.

While Moran declared Woods had conferred with Governor C. C. Young before reversing Hanlon, the governor said he had not talked to any member of the athletic commission relative to the Filipino situation.

Surprise Expressed

Hanlon said he was surprised at Woods' "change of heart." "Woods," he declared, had approved of the order barring Filipinos from fight rings.

The telegram Hanlon received read as follows:

Fights with Filipino entrants are scheduled at El Centro tonight. Deem this most unwise in view of prevailing feeling coupled with the fact of many hundreds of Filipinos in Imperial valley. The further fact of a Filipino being held for trying to sequester a girl not of his race, will not help.
