Some things which has transpired during the year which has just drawn to a close
The year 1902 is at an end. In looking back from the threshold of 1903 it will be seen the year has brought both joy and sorrow -- laughter and tears. The happy wedding bells mingle with the solemn strains of the funeral dirge. We give below a summary of the happenings in Jasper and vicinity during the year as gleaned from the files of the News:
During the week ending Jan. 2 -- Oil well on Bradford place reaches a depth of 810 feet -- Ross Dodd, Leo Gaist and Chas Swihart catch six cotton tails and three jack rabbits.
Jan. 9 -- Postmaster sustained by P. O. Department in his rule not to give school children mail when they apply in bunches. J. W. Crandall exchanges a $3.50 hat for one valued at $1.50.
Jan. 16 -- Allen Whitesel receives a broken leg in a runaway. -- Drilling for oil west of town stops suddenly.
Jan. 23 -- Good specimens of mineral found on the Jasper Rice farm at 115 feet. -- Will Peterson's team begins a series of runaways.
Jan. 30 -- Thermometers register from zero to 8 below. -- Twenty nine Jasper boys resolve not to use tobacco.
Feb. 6 -- Webb Bros. buy a corner lot and prepare to erect a large building -- High school dismissed on account of Prof. Spaid's illness.
Feb. 13 -- Sixteen applications for mail carriers on Routes 3 and 4 -- Prof. Spaid resigns as principal of the Jasper Schools on account of ill health and Prof. Tuttle elected to take his place -- Death of Eva Robinson.
Feb. 20 -- Death of M. A. Estey -- J. K. Wells puzzled over a problem in Arithmetic.
Feb. 27 -- Death of Frank Fenner -- Omer Webb's house damaged by fire -- Theo Underhill dies at Carthage. -- Park McMahan disposes of his cow "Spot."
March 6 -- The Hardenbrook-Rice engine makes its appearance -- Fifteen year old Cora Coon deserts her parents to marry Loyd Worley -- Ton Hardaway turns his face toward Texas.
Shaft on the Rice farm -- Death of Irvin Armstrong and Mrs. R. N. Wardlow -- Spring exodus of Jasper Youths for the west begins.
March 20 -- Jasper shaken by a powder explosion at Columbus, Kansas -- W. H. Ward disposes of a batch of mules to help England whip the Boers.
March 27 -- Jasper Mills bought by S. H. Veatch -- Rural route agent Nevens maps out routes 3 and 4 -- Tom Seal's melodious voice is heard in Jasper.
April 3 -- Eleven candidates examined for rural mail carriers -- Rev. Ferguson becomes pastor of M. E. Church -- City election in which John Fairfield gets one vote for city marshal.
April 10 -- McCaslin & Houck buys the Crume block -- Preliminary steps taken for establishing the First National Bank.
April 15 -- A building boom strikes Jasper -- Bert Webb completes his 20th century. -- William Henry Aiken strikes Jasper.
April 24 -- Fairfield-Harker marriage -- John LaForce and D. W. Garst each take a bride -- Prof. Rowe elected principal of Jasper schools -- Commencement announced for May 2. -- Lamar kicks like fury against Jasper's new mail routes.
May 1 -- A wind storm strikes this locality -- Allen Whitesel forms a poultry trust -- W. H. Aiken discovers pearls in Northfork.
May 8 -- Class of '02 graduates -- Harry Johnston killed by the cars.
May 15 -- An Automobile made in Jasper, U. S. A. appears on the streets -- The fishing season begins -- Lee Garst returns from Colorado without a fortune.
May 22 -- Mrs. Bayles dies from effects of carbolic acid taken by mistake -- Wind causes damages in this vicinity -- Alba defeats Jasper at base ball.
May 29 -- Chas Ward and Lon Fox each have a runaway experience -- El Lauderbaugh, Chas Spaid, Roy Aells and Claude Boyer make a raid on the truant tribe.
June 5 -- Articles of permit granted to First National Bank of Jasper -- John Ward and Chas Swihart settle a difficulty a la Jeffries-Fitzsimmons without going to law -- Asa Crandall drops a 250 pound cake of ice on his great toe.
June 12 -- Harvest begins -- Report Chas. Kerney being killed in a sawmill. -- Death of H. C. Ryan and Mrs. Estey -- National Bank elects officers.
June 19 -- Mrs. Boots wins a $5 prize in bread baking contest -- An over abundance of rain in this locality -- Geo. Patterson receives a broken jaw from a kicking mule.
June 26 -- Jasper defeated at base ball by Golden City -- Jas. Kerney sends word from California that he is still in the land of the living -- McCaslin & Houck open their new store.
July 3 -- New wheat brought in -- Mrs. A. J. Reed dies -- Carter-Currell wedding -- Jasper business men show regulars how to play ball.
July 10 -- The mill starts -- Work resumed in oil well on Bradford, running at rate of 2000 bushels a day.
July 17 -- Joplin and Jasper play two games of base ball with honors divided equally -- Evangelist Brown begins tent meetings in Jasper.
July 24 -- Farmers rejoice over rain sufficient to insure good corn crop -- Wm Teeter returns from California with fourteen pounds of flesh less than he took out.
July 31 -- Death of Albert Nett -- Omer Webb has the bark peeled from his nose while attending a democratic convention at St. Joseph.
Aug. 7 -- New mail routes announced to start Sept 1 -- Jasper mining Co. decide to put up plant at their mines southwest of town. -- Wild west show visits Jasper -- Jack Young who took money from Frank Gulick's house captured but escapes by jumping through window at St James Hotel.
Aug. 14 -- Death of Mrs. B. F. Howard -- John Ward sells his farm to L. C. Lay -- Work commenced on new bank building.
Aug. 21 -- Webb Bros delivers 13 cars of
fertilizer and give dinner to purchasers -- J. H. Near and Preston Roberts appointed mail carriers -- Hardaway-Peterson wedding -- Lula Butts passes away.
Aug. 28 -- Monument erected by W. O. W. in honor of Frank Fenner is unveiled -- Demand for houses in Jasper greater than the supply.
Sept. 4 -- Mail Routes 3 and 4 begin operations. Dr. Hendricks begins the erection of a stone building.
Sept. 11 -- Jasper Schools open with entirely new corps of teachers -- Postmaster Wade marries his assistant Miss Chandler and receives a noisy charivari -- Crawford-Miller wedding.
Sept. 18 -- Foot ball fever attacks Jasper High School with great fury -- Exit William Henry Aiken -- Jasper mining Co. buy a 100 ton mining plant.
Sept. 25 -- I. D. Webb passes away -- Rains, rains, rains, rains. -- Rev. Phillips transferred from Jasper to Lowry City - Park takes a position on the Carthage Press.
Oct. 2 Spring River Baptist Ass'n holds a convention in Jasper -- Congressman M. E. Benton speaks in Jasper -- Roberts-Manley and Hall-Stratton weddings -- Death of Chas Weston.
Oct. 9 -- Hastings buys the Webb building and prepare to expand -- Mr. Herdman buys ten acres and begins to build -- Jasper Mills launches their "Ping Pong Patent" flour on the market. Mrs. Isaac Thompson dies in Kansas.
Oct. 16. W. J. Stone talks to Jasper audience. -- Webb Bros breaks a $75 plate glass while putting it in place in their new building. Mrs. Boucher sells her Millinery store, J. A. Bryan's hat mysteriously disappears.

Nov. 13 Mt Moriah church burns. Amos Harvey's farm house burns. Christian church calls Elder O. W. Jones of Nashville as pastor.
Nov. 20. Jasper Giants defeat Golden City and Jasper "Tigers defeat Boston at foot ball. Several farms change hands.
Nov 27. Newton Owings dies suddenly. Wild rumors of big gas strike on Abe Teeter place, Miller-Herdman wedding. Geo Rex. encounters a savage dog.
Dec 4. D. W Schoolcraft sells his lumber yard. Jasper Mills begin running night and day,
Dec. 11. Charivari crowd given the "marble heart" by Wilbert Miller. New Company takes charge of Jasper Mills.
Dec 18. Much talk of new railroad east of Jasper.
Dec 25. The family of A. H. Dray's have a fire scare from flue burning out. Many Jasperians go home for Christmas.
