Gathering of the Delegates to the Republican State Convention at Harrisburg—The Candidates—An Outline of the Platform.
Special Dispatch.
HARRISBURG, PA., July 10.—Nearly all of the delegates to the republican state committee, which meets in the hall of the house of representatives to-morrow, have arrived. Candidates are also out in force, there being no less than eleven candidates for state treasurer and for auditor general. The office of state treasurer, which was formerly the best paying public position in the state, has been shorn of its perquisites by the passage of a law last winter, but this has not deterred men from entering the race. The most prominent candidates for the position are Col. J. A. Passmore, of Schuylkill, agent for the Appleton's school books; William Levsey, cashier of the treasury, and Willis S. Hulings, an oil producer, from Venango county. The singular anomaly is presented of Col. Quay supporting one candidate and Magee, of Pittsburg, another. Quay is for Passmore, and Magee for Levsey. It is thought that these men will continue, but few are willing to hazard an opinion as to whether Passmore or Levsey will be taken. The outside candidates who constitute the field are Banker M. Chase, of Reading; Banker Bunnell, of Wyoming county; ex-Assemblyman John Hill, of Ind.; Col. A. J. Ege, of McKean county, and others, but the real contest seems to be narrowed down to Quay's man Passmore, Magee's man Levsey, and Hulings, with the chances in the order named. While there are several candidates for auditor general the contest has narrowed down to Jerome B. Niles, a lawyer and member of the legislature from the northern tier of counties, and Col. Thomas J. Grimeson, of the southern border. Niles has the support of the regular leaders of the party that supported Beaver last fall, as well as of the leaders of the independent revolt, but Grimeson has shown great strength, and may be nominated. The chances are, however, in favor of Niles. The best information to be had to-night points to Levsey, of Pittsburg, and Niles, of Tioga, as the ticket. Cooper, who has served for the past two years as chairman of the state committee, and who is known as a stalwart republican, will be continued without opposition, although W. H. Oliver, who made an unsuccessful fight for the United States senate, and who was later a tariff commissioner, has been named for the place. The chairman of the convention has not yet been agreed upon, but it is probable that ex-Congressman John Cessna will be the permanent chairman. The platform will declare in the strongest terms for a protective tariff, and will censure the present democratic state administration; will indorse the course of President Arthur; will call for the redemption by the government of the trade dollar, and will call upon the republican members of the general assembly to stand firm during the present extra session of the legislature on the matter of the congressional, legislative, and judicial apportionment of the state.
HARRISBURG, PA., July 10.—The headquarters of the republican candidates is alive to-night with delegates, nearly all of them having arrived. The fight seems to be a general one and nearly every one of the candidates claim to have the inside track. The opinion seems to prevail that Niles will be nominated for auditor general and Levsey for treasurer. This, however, is mere speculation. A caucus will be held in the morning to agree upon a temporary chairman of the convention. John Cessna seems to have no opposition and will no doubt be chosen and continued as the permanent chairman. The platform will touch upon the trade dollar, the tariff, and most of the points in last year's resolution. The convention will be called to order at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning.
