THE WATCHMAN.

This paper is intended to be a rallying point for those who study moderation respecting the subjects of engrossing interest at the present day. It will cheerfully support all consistent plans of reform; it will encourage all benevolent operations so far as they accord with the WORD OF TRUTH. In a word, this periodical will be devoted to the interests of sound doctrine, of experimental and practical piety, of genuine revivals of religion, of correct morals, of rational liberty, and of improvements, science, literature, and the arts of social life. It is designed for a family miscellany, a friend to the afflicted and a guide of youth.

It is also a leading object of this paper to guard and defend that system of religious doctrine and duty which has descended to us from the fathers of New England, and which they counted more precious than life. In doing this the Watchman will avoid acrimonious controversy and personal invective, but it will feel at liberty freely to discuss all points of doctrine or practice, to consider and remove objections, and to bring all theories to the test of the only infallible standard, the WORD OF GOD. Controversy and discussion are terms of very different import. And while one, with the spirit which generally attends it is to be deprecated, the other is to be cherished, as an essential means of promoting the knowledge of truth.
