Washington Letter to Hartford Evening Post.
The general impression as to the Government providing carriages and horses for the use of the president and his family is incorrect. An office carriage in which the president's secretary can ride when carrying a communication from the president to the capitol or elsewhere is provided, but the equipages suitable for pleasure-driving must be purchased out of his salary and are his own private property. President Hayes has purchased two out of his own means since he has been in the White House. These he is, of course, at liberty to take to his Western home with him when his term as president expires in March. He is fond of driving as a relaxation after his official duties are over for the day, and usually goes out with his wife every afternoon about 3 o'clock, and drives for two hours. He is an early riser, and often walks before breakfast and some times after dark. The breakfast hour is about eight, rarely later than half-past. Mrs Hayes frequently receives visitors by 10 o'clock. At that hour, even when every bed-room in the house has been occupied the previous night, the entire house is in perfect order.
