CIO President Philip Murray celebrated Labor Day this year by purchasing CARE food packages to be sent to trade unionists in each of the eleven countries in Europe in which CARE operates. Through the National CIO Community Services Committee one of the 25 member agencies of CARE the CIO has received many letters from European trade unions requesting aid for their needy members. This action by Mr. Murray dramatizes the fact that the CIO is determined to see that those letters do not go unanswered.
Although the ordinary food package to Europe is restricted to 11 pounds, CARE packages weigh 49 pounds and contain 29 pounds of food. They are filled with canned meats, sugar, candy, evaporated milk, preserved butter; coffee and cocoa powders; cigarettes; and other hard-to-get items--including a can opener. Each package contains 40,000 calories -which goes a long way to supplement the diet of people limited to 1,200 calories a day.
The total cost of each package—including delivery—is $15. Order forms can be filled out in person or mailed to CARE headquarters, 50 Broad Street, New York 4, N. Y.
