—We are requested by the Illinois Central to call further attention to their specials to the Cincinnati and Chicago expositions. We do it with pleasure. It is always a pleasure to us to extend favors of this kind to our railroads and steamboat lines, when asked as a courtesy, not demanded as a right.
We do not expect them to send us passes whenever they have an excursion. If we wanted these favors we would ask for them, as a favor, and not feel offended if they were illiberal enough to refuse to give them and of course they do not expect us to watch their changes and give them "a send off."
It is a courtesy on our part to do such a favor when asked and it would always be done, liberally and satisfactorily, but we do not admit the right of any railroad corporation or any person to DEMAND what is only courtesy on our part to give If we receive favors, it is because we Ask for favors; if we grant them, it is because we are asked to do so. This is a right of newspapers that is sometimes overlooked by their friends as well as themselves. It renders the courtesy too cheap to make it not worth asking for.
We have gotten away from the subject; we want to say a good word for the excursion trains of the I. C. R. R., advertised to-day. What shall we say? The grand old road is well known East West, North and South. She does nothing in a small scale. The patrons of the road have all to be desired in the way of cars, sleepers, time, &c., and we are glad to say a good word for her, because she deserves it and also because, for years, this company has been one of our most liberal and prompt paying advertisers. We can say of it truthfully, we have never lost a dollar in any of our transactions with it. It is true, our job department receives but little of the road's patronage, but we do not expect it. Their headquarters are in Chicago and we would look upon it as a very mean thing if they did not keep their work at home.
