They had Advice in London from the East Indies, That Col. Monson with 200 Highlanders had joined the Troops before Pondicherry, that the third Night after their landing. Col. Coote offered them the Honour of making the first Breach in the Enemy's Entrenchments : Immediately the Highlanders sallied forth, entered the Trenches Sword in Hand, and having killed many of them, obliged the Enemy to take Shelter in the Town. The French seemed to be strangely surprized at their Appearance, and fled in great Consternation. They took Possession of all their Out posts. with 17 Pieces of Cannon, which were filled almost to the Mouth with square Bars of Iron, 6 Inches long. and lesser Pieces of jagged Iron. A Highland Serjeant afterwards observing a Soldier on the Ramparts with a Stand of Colours in his Hand. run up the Wall, and with one Stroke of his Sword, cut it in two, upon which he fled, and the Highlander brought off the Colours in Triumph. These Accounts were dated in October, when our Troops were in Possession of Carrical, a regular Fortification with a Garrison, Chellinbrun and Vandachcrum, with a fortified Redoubt ; and were in Hopes of being Soon in Possession of Pondicherry. The English Fleet lay in such a Manner as to prevent Supplies getting to the Garrison. Several of.the Men of War's Boats went in the Night of the 7th of October, and cut out two Ships from under the Guns of Pondicherry, one of which is a valuable East India man. the other a King's Frigate. The Reinforcements from France were not arrived Our Troops intended to make a general Attack in January. There were Reports in London of Pondicherry's being Surrendered in January; but as the Pacquet(which was spoken with by Captain Tilden of Philadelphia) was not arrived, they had not the Confirmation of it.
