Grateful for Senator Sumner's advocacy of the independence of their country, the Senate and Chamber of Deputies of Haiti recently ordered two full-length portraits of the Senator, to hang in the respective chambers. It was decided the picture in the Deputy Chamber should be placed next to a former ruler, Dessalines, but a member present objected vehemently, as his grandfather had been hung by that personage, and the debate finally resulted in a challenge to fight a duel; but when the affair was about to come off, friends stepped in and prevented bloodshed.
