EDITOR
To the Post Intelligencer:
In reply to the 'Seattle Defender
who said he does not 'think that
the Negro in Seattle is discriminated
against any more than the poor
white person.' I would like to say
this:
Coming from Texas as you do,
you see vast improvements in con-
ditions in Seattle as compared to the
South and the Negroes are the first
to acknowledge these gains and
give credit to Seattle for them. But
you as a white person are probably
not aware of the many remaining
inequalities and infringements of
liberty that daily gnaw at the heart
and mind of the Negro, right here
in Seattle. Have you heard about
the extreme difficulties faced by
Negroes in purchasing property, or
about the restrictions in cemeteries
or about the restrictions in certain
restaurants and hotels, or about
restrictions in the purchase of auto
insurance? And you are misinformed
about the equality of job opportuni-
ties, because I personally know
Negroes who, although qualified,
not been permitted to fill job va-
cancies.
Just because Seattle has achieved
certain improvements we don't want
to stop working against discrimi-
nation. People who are concerned
about the preservation of Democ-
racy will not be satisfied until every
citizen permitted to make his full
contribution to the life of our com-
munity without racial or religious
restrictions. And until that time
comes, the Negro as an American
citizen, has the right, even the duty
to voice his discontent.

Main Argument
the writer disputes the claim that negroes in seattle face no more discrimination than poor whites, citing ongoing inequalities in property purchases, cemeteries, restaurants, hotels, auto insurance, and job opportunities, and asserts that efforts against discrimination must continue until full equality allows every citizen to contribute without racial or religious restrictions.
