(FOR THE ENQUIRER)
NATIONAL AIRS.
BY JOHANNES IN LREMO.
WAR SONG.
O'er the wood cover'd hills, and rich vales of the West,
When the sound of the tocsin has roll'd;
Our youth rise in armor, for Liberty press'd—
'Tis a beautiful scene to behold
The East and the North, throng the hillock like ants
When serpents intrude on their bed—
In the teeth of the mighty, attack in advance—
And pierce till the reptiles are dead
The South and the West, like the hornet and bee
Whom locusts presume to annoy—
Attack the invaders of Liberty's Tree,
Chastise, and repulse and destroy.
Bold hunters like falcons, descend from the lake,
As swift as an arrow can go—
Sharp shooters unerring, for Liberty's stake,
That level whole ranks at a blow!
Our Eagle of Union sedate in his wrath,
Prepares the red darts in his thong—
To penetrate vultures that menace his path
And smite the vindictive and strong
Who would not brave danger, this land to secure,
So free, independent—and bless'd—
Where well employ'd talent and virtue insure
Fame, property, safety and rest?
Rich, rich are the products that millions regale,
Farm, fishery,—forest and bowers:
But little, ah little! would riches avail,
If nothing but riches were ours
Enhancing this treasure that order controuls.
Worth China, Peru and Japan—
Our country's best opulence centres in Souls,
Her noblest production is—Man.
