Full Text

Extract of a letter from Capt. Ebenezer Wheelwright, to his owners in Newbury-Port, dated Bermuda, April 21, 1795.

" Our vessel, with her cargo, was brought to trial this day, but the decree of the court is not yet known, though I am well convinced that it will be an interrogatory decree, which is, that the vessel and cargo will be appraised here, and delivered to me on condition of my giving bond with sufficient security for the amount of the appraisement, paying the charges, &c.--which bond will be cancelled should the property be hereafter acquitted, which no doubt will be the case, We are to give two and a half per cent on the appraisement here, for security, and to proceed on to Philadelphia, where we are consigned to the house of Gardner, Holden and Co. All who do not belong there are to give that house the consignment and to deposit the amount of the bond given here in their hands. Ten days ago I waited on his Excellency the Governor respecting a petition which had been presented by some of my countrymen, begging that their trials might be postponed for 60 days ; however, his Excellency advised me to bring on my trial as soon as possible, saying that he had no doubt but I should be satisfied with the issue, that more he was not authorised to say. In consequence of which I have been ever since endeavouring to have a hearing, but could not bring it about until to-day. Our vessel is the first that will be privileged with an interrogatory decree, if it should be, as I have every reason to believe it will. Nine others of our countrymen will stand or fall with me, they being in the same predicament."
