BOY EMULATES NOVEL HERO

Messenger Turns Desperado and Attempts to Hold Up Bank, But Loses Nerve.

Mexico City, Mo., April 27.--An attempt was made yesterday to rob the Mexico Savings Bank. It was frustrated when a boy bandit, after firing one shot which whizzed past the head of Joe Guthrie, a bookkeeper, lost his "nerve" and fled.

"Hands up," commanded the youthful desperado as he approached Guthrie's window. The bookkeeper failed to respond, and the shot, which narrowly missed him, followed.

Several bank patrons were entering at the moment, and the lone bandit fled, apparently losing his nerve, just as he was about to follow Guthrie into his "cage."

The police are seeking a 19-year old messenger boy, who, they believe, attempted the robbery after weeks of persistent reading of "dime" novels.
