Mr. Compton's Good Work.

Representative Compton was at the office of the lighthouse board on Saturday with reference to the matter of erecting a light at Cobb's Point bar, at the mouth of the Wicomico river, St. Mary's County, Md. This is a dangerous point for navigation, and the light is much needed. Mr. Croxton, of Virginia, some time since presented a bill for the erection of a light at Cobb's Point bar on the Wicomico river, Virginia, and the lighthouse board made a recommendation to this effect. Mr. Compton informed Mr. Croxton and the lighthouse board that there is no Wicomico river in Virginia, but it required some pains to convince them of their error. He, however, succeeded in straightening it out, and as soon as he can, will introduce a bill to appropriate $15,000 for the erection of the desired light, and will have the sanction of the lighthouse board and the inspectors. Requests have been made for the dredging of the Upper Patuxent, from Benedict to Hill's Landing, but on inquiry at the engineer bureau Mr. Compton found that there was no record of any survey having been made, which is a necessary preliminary to an appropriation. He will write to Col. Craighill about it, and if the survey has not been made, he will move for the insertion of an item providing for the same in the river and harbor bill. Through the instrumentality of Mr. Chapman, items were put in a former river and harbor bill providing for survey of Port Tobacco, Piscataway and Mattawoman creeks. Mr. Compton ascertained that the surveys had been made and the engineers had reported against making any appropriation for the improvement of these streams.
