JACKSON-(ANP)- The NAACP is expected to begin unfolding a careful plan of lawsuits attacking school segregation in Mississippi within the next two weeks Thurgood Marshall, general counsel for the NAACP. said last week suits will be filed in June, marking the first time that Mississippi segregation has been challenged in the courts.
Marshall did not say what cities would be sued, but it is expected that the attacks will be launched in Jackson, Natchez, Vicksburg. Yazoo City and Clarksdale,
Each of these cities has been petitioned by Negroes for desegregation of schools It is reported that the NAACP has allotted almost half a million dollars to wage the legal battle in the state There is little likelihood of the cases reaching the Supreme Court.
Attorney Gen Joe Patterson said he is not surprised at the action and said he assumed Jackson, state's capital, would be the first target
Patterson said "the attorney general's office will meet them at the local level and go all the way."
He explained that his office would join the defendant school district and actively defend the suit to the U. S Supreme Court, if necessary.
