New York, Dec. 7-(AP)-The college basketball season is too young to produce any definite trends but St. John's of Brooklyn is beginning to show its bicepts in the East.
The Redmen have won their first four starts and have given impressive performances in two appearances in Madison Square Garden.
Last week they defeated Tennessee, a Southeastern Conference power, 67-45. Then last night, with 15,827 looking on, they outlasted Denver University in an overtime game, 55-53.
Denver's great Olympic star, Vince Boryla, poured 36 points at the Redmen in the first of two pulsating games at the Garden but St. John's had enough to match this one man whirlwind, and then some.
Don Noonan, a sub forward, sank a long, arching shot from halfway to the midstripe to win the game for St. John's after the contest had been thrown into an extra five-minute period. The regular time ended in a 48-48 draw.
The other half of the garden twin bill saw Colgate hand New York University's young, green quintet, a 64-63 setback on Curt Norris' driving layup shot in the last second of play. It was the first defeat for NYU, one of 1947's powers which had beaten Baylor in a previous Garden start.
Ohio State smothered Marquette, 72-47; Minnesota trounced Nebraska, 61-52; Indiana beat Michigan State, 48-36, and Purdue topped Detroit 51-42.
In the East Dartmouth won over Vermont, 51-41, and St. Francis of Brooklyn whipped John Marshall, 69-53. Visiting Brigham Young handed Muhlenberg its first setback, 60-56.
North Carolina and North Carolina State of the Southern Conference both won victories. North Carolina trampled Elon, 66-32, while N. C. State clipped George Washington, 66-37. Vanderbilt defeated Chattanooga, 67-51.
The National AAU champions and Olympic representatives, the Phillips Oilers, stepped into college competition and lashed West Simmons toppled Southwestern, 66-32.
