Do Not Accept Credit.

Brother Farmers:—“Beware of the dog.” He has bitten us once, let us take heed that he bite us not the second time. Some merchants are offering credit—do not accept it; pay for everything you buy, though you may suffer a little inconvenience at the time. Stick to it and keep out of debt, and turn every dollar possible to pay up the old debts. It is better to suffer a little at present than to suffer more in the future.

No matter if your clothes are old and poor—let the good wife patch them; put patch upon patch, if necessary, so they be clean and whole, no sensible person will think the less of you for wearing them, if they know you do it from a desire to save means to pay your debts. Be economical in your living, buy no luxuries till your debts are paid. The bare necessaries of life cost very little; a good living is very comfortable to have, but do not purchase it at the expense of future prosperity. A bushel of cornmeal made into hasty pudding and a gallon of molasses for sauce, will keep quite a large family a week, and costing about $1.25; it is both good and wholesome. Live as well as your means will allow; but better to live on the pudding and molasses than get into debt for more expensive food. Stick to these principles, and if there is any thing “in the man” you will be sure to be emancipated from the slavery of debt.—Prairie Farmer.
