General Assembly.

Thursday Evening Oct. 28, 1841.

The act to repeal certain sections of the law relative to the right of married women, passed at the June session, was taken up. The portions proposed to be repealed, were those which give to a divorced woman, under certain circumstances set forth in the law, the custody of her child, &c. The repeal was contended for by Messrs. J. H. Clarke, Gavitt, Spencer, and King; and opposed by Messrs. Jackson, Randolph, and Curtis. On taking the question, the vote stood, for the repeal, 24—against it, 41. So the act was not repealed.

Friday Morning, Oct. 29, 1841.

The prayers of the petitions of Eliza A. Case and Isaac Dyer, for liberation, were granted.

M. D'Hauteville had leave to withdraw his petition.

The prayers of the petitions of Luke T. Rice, et. al., and of the Washington Grenadier Company, were granted.

The act repealing certain acts relating to hawking and peddling was read a second time. Mr. Robinson was opposed to its passage. He did not wish to see the power of employing agents taken away from manufacturers.

The debate was continued by Messrs. Randolph, Spencer, and Howe.

The act was postponed, and a committee consisting of Messrs. Robinson, Bosworth, Burgess, of Providence, and Randolph, were appointed to revise the law relative to hawking licenses.

The act in amendment of the acts relative to the measurement of grain, salt, &c., was passed.

The prayers of the petitions of the Blackstone Canal Company were so far granted as to continue them with an order of notice and stay of the sale on execution.

The House then took a recess of half an hour.

When they met again the concurrences from the Senate were read—the accounts of expenses of the session allowed and the joint vote of adjournment passed.

The Assembly then adjourned to meet in Providence on the second Monday in January next.
