Monte Video, Dec. 23, 1839.
I have to inform you of the arrival yesterday of Admiral Dupotet, in a sixty-four gun ship, with six bomb vessels, from Rio Janeiro, destined for Buenos Ayres. I have learned from undoubted authority that no alteration whatever has been made in the original ultimatum by the French government; consequently, the blockade is likely to remain for months to come, as heretofore; and should the Admiral determine upon the bombardment of the city, it would only have a tendency to augment the popularity of Rosas, and increase the existing difficulties.
We are of decided opinion, that unless France sends out a formidable body of troops, Rosas will sustain himself, in defiance of their blockade and bomb shells. We have every reason to believe that the belligerents, in this province, are now engaged in mortal combat, as they were seen yesterday maneuvering for the possession of the most advantageous ground. Great excitement prevails in the city, and all are anxiously waiting for the announcement of the result.
