Extract of a letter from a gentleman in
Boston, dated Nov. 9, to his friend in
Portsmouth.
"The Lord is at work marvel-
ously in this, and the adjacent towns.
Sinners are awakened, saints edified,
and Christ's Church built up. Last
Sabbath there were Twenty-Four add-
ed to the two churches under the care
of Drs. Stillman & Baldwin, besides
daily additions before, of from 12 to
20 on a Communion Sabbath. There
was never such a day before in Bos-
ton. There are public or private lec-
tures or prayer or church meetings
every evening in the week.--The
blessed work is not confined to this
place ; Malden (blessed be God) is
Sharing largely in it, under the instru-
mentality of the worthy Mr. Pottle
from your quarter. There is also signs
of a great work of God's power and
grace in Charlestown, Reading, Wo-
burn, &c: the attention of the people
is remarkably called up, and there is
a pleasing prospect of the work spread-
ing far and wide. It reminds us of
the blessed Millennium days we read
of, that are to come ; we should pray
that this may be the commencing of
them. The wicked adversary makes
considerable opposition thro' his in-
struments (I mean those that willing-
ly hold themselves bond-slaves to sin
and Satan.) They have our prayers,
as I hope they will have yours, that
Christ may call after them as he did
after the persecuting Saul. Why per-
secutest thou me !! Do write me soon,
and let me know how the work goes
on with you and whether the opposi-
tion is as great as it was formerly."
